The United States of America has historically positioned itself as a “nation of immigrants”, with sustained positive net migration for decades. However, due to the current political atmosphere of the U.S, there has been a sharp decline in both legal and irregular migration, even though other countries (e.g. Canada, Australia, EU states) are adopting more open migration policies. Current projections suggest that the U.S. may experience near-zero or negative net migration for the first time in over 50 years.
